Maria Sifianou is Professor Emerita of Linguistics at the Department of English Language and Literature, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She studied in Greece (B.A.) and in England (PGLELT, M.A. and Ph.D.). Her publications include the books Politeness Phenomena in England and Greece (Oxford University Press, 1992/1999/2002) and Discourse Analysis (Hillside Press, 2006) and a number of articles in edited books and international journals. She has co-edited Themes in Greek Linguistics (with I. Philippaki-Warburton & K. Nicolaidis, Benjamins, 1994), and Linguistic Politeness across Boundaries: The Case of Greek and Turkish (with A. Bayraktaroğlu, Benjamins, 2001) among others. She is a member of the advisory/editorial board of a number of international journals (e.g., Journal of Greek Linguistics, Journal of Politeness Research, Journal of Pragmatics, and Pragmatics) and of book series (e.g., Pragmatic Interfaces, Equinox and Figurative Thought and Language, Benjamins), co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Language Aggression and Conflict (Benjamins), and the Focus on (Im)politeness book series (Routledge). She has acted as a referee for manuscripts submitted to various publishers (e.g., Elsevier, Oxford University Press and Mouton de Gruyter) and for papers submitted to various international journals and conferences. Her main research interests include politeness phenomena and discourse analysis in an intercultural perspective.
