Web: Academic Profile
Rosina Marquez Reiter's research has primarily concentrated on cross-cultural pragmatics. A hallmark of her work has been the advancement of insights into the different cultural norms that underlie the appropriateness of conversational encounters in English and Spanish, including research into service encounters in diverse institutional contexts as well as politeness orientations.
More recently, she has focused on intercultural communication in communicative environments resulting from globalization, with particular attention to the contact between native speakers of Spanish who come from different backgrounds, have had limited contact with each other's lingua-culture and speak different standard varieties of the same basic language. Her interest in the role that language plays in globalized communicative contexts has, of late, led her to focus on multiculturalism and mobility.
She has published research monographs and journal articles dealing with pragmatic phenomena such as indirectness, face, politeness, pragmatic variation, speech acts, conversational interactions and service encounters. She is currently working on multidialectalism and issues of (im)mobility among Latin Americans in Madrid and London where she examines linguistic practices of inclusion and exclusion and the resituated cultural practice of palanca, respectively.
She is the founding editor of Spanish in Context, Associate Editor of Pragmatics, advisory board member of various international journals, and member of national and international Research Councils.
